How did I get here?
I grew up on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Guam-ever heard of it? It is a beautiful little 34-mile island rich with rain but lacking in progressive education. Because of a generous benefactor, I went to a prestigious private school on the island, while my cousins didn't. At the age of 11, I realized that there was inequity in education and I knew that I wanted to do everything I could to take it away.
I started my career in education at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, where I received my Bachelor's of Arts degree in English/Writing and Rhetoric. I continued to work there after my graduation in the Office of Admission, where I sifted through thousands of applications to grant college admission. After 6 years of traveling as an admission counselor to boarding schools in Hawaii and the East Coast and public schools in LA and Chicago, I continued to study the growing disparity I had come to loathe and understand.
I made the move to the High Tech High organization, where I started teaching 9th grade Humanities. I found a place where I am surrounded by other educators who share my passion for equity and by children who understand the power of choice. I received my teaching credentials in English and Social Science through the High Tech High Credentialing program and have worked at several schools in the organization for 4 years. I am currently teaching 53 amazing 9th graders at High Tech High Media Arts. I am grappling with questions every day about how to best serve my kids so they can serve others. I am thrilled to be continuing my education with the HTH GSE in the Teacher Leadership Program.
